Favourite Records of the Year. Selected by: Gridlink

Melt-Banana did not promise too much: with ‚Longhena‚ Gridlink released the best grind record of the year, and maybe also the last act of their peaking carreer. Jon Chang not only found the time to tell us about his favourite records of this past year 2014 for the Heavy Pop advent calender, he’s also giving out presents left and right: countless demos from all phases of Gridlink are on his Dropboxand his Facebook page is always worth a look.

Swarrrm – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00M1AGP9C“ target=“_blank“ ]Flower[/amazon_link]‘
One of the most mature and complex records I heard was this title by Swarrrm. As I get older, there are certain records that affect me differently than they would have as a teen or twenty something. I love this album because, despite not understanding the lyrics, it really feels like an album about growing old without being cheesy.

Panopticon – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00MGS3F7E“ target=“_blank“ ]Roads to the North[/amazon_link]‘
I discovered this band and was put off initially by their folk songs. I’m still not in love with all of them but I think represents a whole new palette of feelings that can be expressed with black metal.

Godflesh – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00MMU3YKO“ target=“_blank“ ]A World Lit Only By Fire[/amazon_link]‘
Godflesh had not released much to hold my attention since Selfless. This album surprised me, nailing that balance of devastating heaviness with sadness and introspection that unique to Broadrick.

Ling Tosite Sigure – ‚[amazon_link id=“B00NP7IN22″ target=“_blank“ ]Enigmatic Feeling[/amazon_link]‘
This is a love em or hate em band. I really like them. Their sound is totally unique and their energy is hard to deny.

….Though honestly I listened to a lot of older stuff this year like the last Maximum the Hormone, SOB, 1349, Megadeth, etc.
