Billy Strings & Willie Nelson – California Sober
Virtuose Billy Strings ist zu Ikone Willie Nelsons irrer 90er-Party geladen – und holt im Gegenzug die Country-Legende für den flotten Quasi-Bluesgrass-Spaß California Sober an Bord.
Die mit der Gang um Jarod Walker (Mandoline), Royal Masat (Bass) Billy Failing (Banjo), Alex Hargreaves (Fiedel) und Shannon Forrest (eine dezente Snare Drum sollte auch Bluegrass-Puristen nicht stören) eingespielte Single ist eine ebenso catchy wie direkt daherkommenden Weed-Uptempo-Hymne, locker und nonchalant beschwingt. So unangestrengt wird die schwindelfrei gepickte Gitarre mit schlendernder Mundharmonika (Mickey Raphael) und Pedal Steel-Träumerein (von Doug Jernigan) ausgeschmückt, mit einem Band aus in Spielfreude kaum zu bändigen Soli verziert. Das Songwriting und die Performance sind erstklassig, wenngleich vielleicht relativ erwartbar eine gewisse Komfortzone bedienend.
Doch das macht wirklich Bock, zumal die Texte mit einem frechen Augenzwinkern durchaus eine gewisse Tiefe addieren.
Strings: „And keep the hard stuff and the whiskey from my head/ Well, I guess that’s just the trouble when you’re always seein‘ double/ And the lines are gettin‘ twice as hard to see/ I’ve had years I don’t recall, but I’m told I had a ball/ At least somebody did who looked a lot like me“.
Nelson: „The old crew don’t get together anymore these days much ever/ After some went straight and some went straight to jail/ Now they’re busy postin‘ vids and just tryin‘ to raise their kids/ Instead of raisin‘ holy hell and postin‘ bail.“
Und dann haut dieses toll zueinander passende Gespann ohne jedwede Generations-Gräben eben auch noch einen schmissigen Refrain hin, den man nicht mehr aus dem Kopf bekommt: „So I’m California sober as they say/ And lately I can’t find no other way/ I can’t stay out and party like I did back in the day/ So I’m California sober as they say.“ Eine tolle kleine Hatz!
